Gure Garmendia
KPA CTP
Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner
Gure (pronounced Goo-reh) Garmendia was born and raised in the beautiful Basque Country, attended McGill University in Montreal where she met her husband, and then moved to Ohio to earn an MBA from the Ohio State University. After graduation, she moved to Seattle to raise a family and pursue her dream of owning a pet related business.
For Gure, a professional dog coach and mother of two, dog training has always been a way of life. She was given her first dog at the age of 8 and has been learning how to best care for and train dogs ever since. In 1994 she discovered clicker training and was immediately taken by the positive reinforcement way of training. She started teaching puppy kindergarten classes in 1998, and fell in love. Her innate drive to always continue learning and her fascination with the best and latest practices for training dogs inspired her to become a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA CTP). She continues to learn by attending classes, seminars and conferences on animal training and behavioral sciences and by voraciously reading modern dog training publications.
She is currently raising Luke, a Guide Dogs for the Blind puppy as part of a pilot program. With her own dogs, Gure has been involved in flyball, agility, tracking, nose work, herding and therapy work. She has also been known to train the occasional cat, rat and chicken!
Gure has extensive experience in dealing with dogs in stressful situations and reading dog body language. She has worked with several vets both in the clinic environment and doing house calls, as well as in facilities with grooming and boarding kennels. These experiences with dogs under stress led her to make her goal to socialize and prepare dogs with the life skills necessary not just for daily life, but for the trying situations that they will undoubtedly encounter during their lives.
